TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction)

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) affects the muscles in the jaw that are used for chewing food and can cause a variety of clinical problems. This joint, also known as TMJ, is responsible for the up and down and side to side movement of your jaw. When the joint is inflamed, or the associated muscles and tendons are too tight, you begin to feel the symptoms of dysfunctional jaw movement. Besides chronic headaches, you may notice a limited range of motion in the head and neck. Those who suffer from TMD also exhibit unique symptoms connected to dental issues, such as teeth grinding, jaw clenching, or improper tooth alignment.

Common symptoms may also include pain in the sides of the face, neck, shoulders, jaw joint and discomfort around or in the ear. Sometimes a popping or clicking sound occurs when opening and closing the jaw, and the condition can cause muscle fatigue and swelling. The symptoms are caused by the constricted blood supply to the jaw, and the muscles around the jaw as cellular waste builds up and stops oxygen from reaching cells. The healing process is slowed, and inflammation increases creating soreness and spasms.

TMD Treatment in Roanoke, Vinton, and Smith Mountain Lake

Since TMD affects oral health and your day-to-day comfort, professional treatment is recommended to restore your long-term health. Our dental office offers procedures that relax muscles to ensure normal bite function and reduce stress on the muscles in your neck and head. At your first visit, we will examine the range of motion in the jaw to see if the function has been limited in any way and identify sources of pain.

For most TMJ disorder cases, Dr. Kevorkian will prescribe an oral splint. This bite guard can be soft or firm, depending on the needs of the case, and is worn by inserting the device over the teeth. The supportive pressure of these orthopedic appliances prevents teeth clenching, teeth grinding, and overall motion of the joint during sleep. Different types of splints can focus on treating different symptoms, and comfortable nighttime splints can be created, as well as a daytime version that is both smaller and more discreet.
